Burning Man Facts

Mini Tornadoes appear during the burning of the man or the mausoleum.  Also known, “The Ancient One” these impressive smoke whirls form when intense heat rises to combine with colder air around the playa.

The art car speed limit is 5MPH

To qualify as an art car, the vehicle must be permanently modified and registered with the Black Rock City’s Dept. of Mutant Vehicles.

2001 was the first year the structure for the man was assembled in Nevada Desert at the Work Ranch, 10 miles North of Black Rock City.

The Burning Man Event cost over $5 Million to stage.

Daytime Temperature can reach 107F and During night lows 40F.

Money can only be used for two items in Black Rock City: Ice & Coffee

Profits from ice sales benefit the Empire/Gerlach School System.  Profit from coffee goes toward feeding the BM 2,500+ volunteers and paid staff.

Planning and implementation of the next year event will begin during the current year and take all year.

Playa is the remnant of a 13,000 year old lake that covered 8,665 sq. mi.

The largest mammoth fossil was found in Black Rock in 1979.  The original mammoth is thought to have weighed 13,000 lbs. and 13 ft. High.

Burning Man goes to length to prevent burn scars on the playa which can last for years and present hazards to vehicles.

While Black Rock City only exists for a week each year, it becomes a fully functional municipality including a post office, airport, café, DMV, daily newspaper, several radio stations and Dept. of Public Works.
